Like it or not, Christmas is getting nearer and nearer. With Covid-19 ongoing however, the way we do Christmas may end up being a lot more different than we are used to. Social distancing guidelines and lockdowns are dictating exactly what we can and can’t do and unfortunately, this includes some of our well-loved Christmas traditions.
As adults, we understand that this is the way life must be for the time being, but for children, it can be a little more difficult to accept. So how can we make Christmas still as magical for kids? Read on for some great ideas for activities for the run up to Christmas.
Oh no they didn’t! Yes, with great regret, Christmas pantomimes as we know them are cancelled for 2020. Don’t worry though! Pantomime production companies up and down the country have been working on ways to deliver Christmas pantos even with all these guidelines in place! Choose from Car Park Pantos, to Online pantos, to socially distanced pantos! Something to suit everyone and to keep the magic going for the little ones. The show must go on!
For children, one of the best parts of the run up to Christmas is the wonderous trip to see Father Christmas. Sadly, a physical visit to see the jolly man in red this year doesn’t seem promising, however, we at Virtual Father Christmas have a fantastic solution that should still make your kids eyes light up. You can book a virtual meeting with Santa Claus over Zoom! With a variety of options, including a personal gift delivered by one of Santa

Christmas Movie Night
Get the kids’ excitement going by having a weekly Christmas movie night! Build some cosy forts, get everyone in their matching pyjamas or Christmas jumpers and break out the snacks and hot chocolate! Don’t forget the marshmallows and gingerbread men! You could even turn it into a slumber party with comfy quilts and sleeping bags around the tree! Who says you can’t have a sleepover in your own front room? Have plenty of games, giggles, and snuggles for a fun and festive night in.
Christmas Scavenger Hunt
Christmas parties won’t really be allowed to go on this year, but there is still plenty of fun to be had at home with your children. Fun and games keep the festive season alive and will make things just as special for them. Try a wacky Christmas scavenger hunt to lift those spirits. Hide sweets, treats and other fun things around the home and garden and create fun clues for your children to find. You can even get the dreaded Elf on the Shelf in on the fun!
Make a Christmas Video Card
Why have boring old Christmas cards when you can record a live action one with the whole family? Dress up in costumes, put on a skit and send to all your loved ones for that personal touch! Children love dressing up and performing, and sending a truly personalised video card to your nearest and dearest will make it all the more special. It doesn’t have to be fancy and you can even record it on a phone or tablet.
Christmas Song Bingo
It’s nearly time to break out the Christmas music! We actually can’t wait! If you and your children are fans of the festive tunes, why not make it into a game of bingo too? Make up some bingo cards with the different songs on and either play the radio or whack on a premade playlist. The one to tick off all their songs wins a Crimbo goodie!
Christmas Light Walk
There’s something magical about seeing houses all lit up and decorated for Christmas when you’re out and about. We love the idea of wrapping up warm and going for a walk just after dinner to blow the cobwebs away and to see all the beautiful colour and lights. We bet the kids will love it too!
